No industry in Canada can claim as visceral a role in the lives
of every citizen as that of healthcare. Canada's universal
access to medical care is a source of national pride, but also
frustration. Emergency-room wait times and inefficient use of
resources are compromising the quality of this essential
service. Meanwhile, the cost of delivering health care has
climbed alarmingly in recent years, claiming more than nine per
cent of Canada's gross domestic product.
What can be done to remedy this vast sector and restore its
place of pride among Canadians? On May 6, a group of healthcare
industry opinion leaders gathered in Montreal, Quebec, to
discuss these issues. Their insights offer a timely prescription
for a system that is sorely in need of rehabilitation.
